Statue sculptures

June 10th, 2010

A statue is a sculpture in the round representing a person or persons, an animal, or an event, normally full-length, as opposed to a bust, and at least close to life-size, or larger. Its primary concern is representational.

The definition of a statue is not always clear-cut; sculptures of a person on a horse, called Equestrian statues, are certainly included, and in many cases, such as a Madonna and Child or a Pietà, a sculpture of two people will also be. A small statue, usually small enough to be picked up, is called a statuette or Figurine.

Many statues are built on commission to commemorate a historical event, or the life of an influential person. Many statues are intended as public art, exhibited outdoors or in public buildings for the edification of passers-by, with a larger magnitude than normal words could ever have for the common man.

On rare occasions, statues themselves become historic and inspire their own historic events. In 1986, when the Statue of Liberty marked her one-hundredth anniversary, a three-day centennial celebration in her honor attracted 12 million. The guest list was unique. “We invited all the great statues of the world to her birthday party and created giant puppets to represent them,” said Jeanne Fleming, director of the event. “Each one arrived accompanied by native music.”

There is an urban legend concerning a code for mounted statue sculptures, whereby the horse’s hooves are supposed to indicate how the rider met his end. One hoof off the floor would indicate the rider died of wounds received in battle, or perhaps was just wounded in battle; two hooves off the floor would indicate the rider was killed in battle. An examination of the equestrian statues in most major European cities shows this is not true. If it ever was true, the practice appears to have died out in the 19th century.

Stateus are amongst the wonders of the world, with the Colossus of Rhodes and the Statue of Zeus at Olympia among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and the Moai of Easter Island among the wonders of the modern world.

Picnic Table

May 14th, 2010

t3-106-g

A picnic table (or sometimes a picnic bench) is a modified table with attached benches, designed for eating a meal outdoors.

Picnic tables are used as a place to sit outdoors any time you need a table. They are used for dining, for resting, for doing crafts, and for other activities. Picnic tables are generally found in many parks.

Picnic tables are also used indoors, when it is desired to have attached seating to tables. This is most common is school cafeterias, community centers, and employee break rooms.

Full sized picnic tables generally seat from six to ten individuals, and are generally placed in a location, such as a back yard, park, or barbecue area, permanently or long-term. Full-sized picnic tables are very widely used in public spaces and private homes, but are generally too bulky to use for casual outdoor picnics.

There are various kinds of picnic tables, the following is some description about them.
Picnic tables are traditionally made of wood, but modern tables are often made from plastic or brushed metal.

Wooden tables
Wooden tables are constructed using lumber boards. Protection for the wood (stain, paint, or wood protectant that repels water) is necessary to protect it from cracking, warping, or rotting due to moisture. The table-top and bench-top boards are attached to the trusses or beams using wood screws or nails. The legs can be secured with carriage bolts fastened by nuts and washers.

Plastic tables
Blow molded plastic picnic tables are becoming more popular because they are lighter, stronger, and less expensive than wooden tables, and require no maintenance. They are also more durable than wooden tables, and last longer.

Metal tables
Metal picnic tables are becoming more popular in public parks because they are heavy and durable, and require little maintenance. Metal tables are sometimes attached onto concrete pads when theft is a concern.

Stone or concrete tables
Stone or concrete picnic tables are the most durable variety, but suffer from the drawbacks of high price, and being fixed in place and immobile.

Children’s picnic table
A children’s picnic table is an undersized picnic table designed to be used by up to four children. They are almost always constructed of plastic or wood, and are used for eating and playing.

Trapeze

May 13th, 2010

A trapeze is a short horizontal bar hung by ropes or metal straps from a support. Different from swings as recreational equipment, It is an aerial apparatus commonly found in circus performances. Trapeze acts may be static, swinging or flying, and may be performed solo, double, triple or as a group act.

Types of trapezes

•    Static trapeze refers to a trapeze act in which the performer moves around the bar and ropes, performing a wide range of movements including balances, drops, hangs while the bar itself stays mostly in place. The difficulty on a static trapeze is making every move look effortless. It is like dance, in that most people of a reasonable level of strength can get onto the bar for the first time and do the tricks but an experienced artist will do them with much more grace and style. The trapeze bar is weighted and often has cable inside the supporting ropes for extra strength.

•    Swinging trapeze (or swinging single trapeze) refers to an act performed while the trapeze swings. For an example of this discipline, watch the trapeze act in Alegría. The performer builds up swing from a still position, and uses the momentum of the swing to execute their tricks. Usually tricks on a swinging trapeze are thrown on the peaks of the swing and involve dynamic movements that require precise timing. Most of the tricks begin with the performer sitting or standing on the bar and end with the performer catching the bar in his/her hands or in an ankle hang (hanging off of the ankles by bracing them between the rope and the bar). This act requires a great deal of strength, grace, and flexibility.

•    Flying trapeze refers to a trapeze act where a performer, or “flyer,” grabs the trapeze bar and jumps off a high platform, or pedestal board, so gravity creates the swing. The swing’s parts are the cast out at the far end of the first swing, the beat back and rise as the performer swings back above the pedestal board, and then the trick is thrown at the far end of the second swing. The performer often releases the bar and is caught by another performer, the “catcher,” who hangs by his or her knees on another trapeze, or sometimes on a cradle, which can be either stationary or also swinging. People of any size are able to execute basic trapeze maneuvers. Flying trapeze is generally done over a net, or occasionally over water. The flying trapeze was invented in the late 19th century in France by Jules Léotard.

•    Washington trapeze (also known as head trapeze or heavy trapeze) refers to a variation on static and swinging trapeze where the aerialist performs various headstand skills on the bar, which is typically much heavier than a normal trapeze bar and has a small (about 4-inch round) headstand platform on it. The trapeze is supported by wire cables rather than ropes, and the apparatus will often be lifted and lowered during the act

•    Dance trapeze (also known as single-point trapeze) refers to a trapeze used by many modern dance companies in aerial dance. The ropes of the trapeze are often both attached to a single swivel, allowing the trapeze to spin.

•    Double trapeze (also known as the French trapeze) is a variation on the static trapeze, and features two performers working together on the same trapeze to perform figures and bear each other’s weight. It can also be performed swinging, in which case the act is called “swinging double trapeze.

•    Multiple trapeze refers to a number of different shapes and sizes of trapeze, including double trapeze, triple trapeze and larger multiples designed for use by multiple simultaneous flyers. Shaped trapezes are apparatuses that can take virtually any shape imaginable.

History of Trampoline

April 24th, 2010

A trampoline is a device consisting of a piece of taut, strong fabric stretched over a steel frame using many coiled springs. People bounce on trampolines for recreational and competitive purposes.

The fabric on which users bounce (commonly known as the ‘bounce mat‘ or ‘trampoline bed’) is not elastic in itself; the elasticity is provided by the springs which connect it to the frame.

It is said that a kind of trampolining was done by the Inuit people, who used to toss each other into the air on a walrus skin (see Nalukataq), something like the sheet used by firemen to catch people jumping out of burning buildings. There also is some evidence of people in Europe having been tossed into the air by a number of people holding a blanket; Mak in the Wakefield Second Shepherds’ Play and Sancho Panza in Don Quixote are both subjected to blanketing – however, these are clearly non-voluntary, non-recreational instances of quasi-judicial, mob-administered punishment. The 19th-century circus poster on which the Beatles’ song “Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!” is based references performance on trampoline, though the device is thought to have been something more like a springboard than the fabric-and-coiled-springs apparatus presently in use.

These may not be the true antecedents of the modern sport of trampolining, but it is certain that in the early years of the 20th century, some acrobats used a “bouncing bed” on the stage to amuse audiences. The bouncing bed was in reality a form of small trampoline covered by bedclothes, on which the acrobats performed mostly comedy routines.

According to circus folklore, the trampoline was supposedly first developed by an artiste named du Trampolin, who saw the possibility of using the trapeze safety net as a form of propulsion and landing device and experimented with different systems of suspension, eventually reducing the net to a practical size for separate performance. While there were trampoline-like devices used for shows and in the circus, the story of du Trampolin is probably apocryphal, and no documentary evidence has been found to support it.

The first modern trampolines
The first modern trampoline was built by George Nissen and Larry Griswold in 1936. Nissen was a gymnastics and diving competitor and Griswold was a tumbler on the gymnastics team, both at the University of Iowa, USA. They had observed trapeze artists using a tight net to add entertainment value to their performance and experimented by stretching a piece of canvas, in which they had inserted grommets along each side, to an angle iron frame by means of coiled springs. It was initially used to train tumblers but soon became popular in its own right. Nissen explained that the name came from the Spanish trampolín, meaning a diving board. George Nissen heard the word on a demonstration tour in Mexico in the late 1930s and decided to use an anglicized form as the trademark for the apparatus.

In 1942 Griswold and Nissen created the Griswold-Nissen Trampoline & Tumbling Company, and began making trampolines commercially in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

The generic term for the trademarked trampoline was a rebound tumbler and the sport began as rebound tumbling. It has since lost its trademark and has become a generic trademark.

Early in their development Nissen anticipated trampolines being used in a number of recreational areas, including those involving more than one participant on the same trampoline. One such game was Spaceball — a game of two teams of two on a single trampoline with specially constructed end ‘walls’ and a middle ‘wall’ through which a ball could be propelled to hit a target on the other sides end wall.

Types of Playground Slide

April 20th, 2010

Playground slides are found in parks, schools, playgrounds and backyards. The slide may be flat, or half cylindrical or tubular to prevent falls. Slides are usually constructed of plastic or metal and they have a smooth surface that is either straight or wavy. The user, typically a child, climbs to the top of the slide via a ladder or stairs and sits down on the top of the slide and “slides” down the slide. In Australia the playground slide is known as a slippery slide or slippery dip.

e69caae591bde5908d

Sliding pond or sliding pon is a term used in the New York City area to denote a playground slide.A playground slide is called Ghasargundi in Marathi (a language in India). An archaic word for the slide in Marathi is “Fisal Patti”. This word was used decades back by those couldn’t pronounce Ghasargundi well.

Spiral slides
A playground slide may be wrapped around a central pole to form a descending spiral forming a simple helter skelter.

Covered slides
A playground slide (and some professional slides) may be covered or enclosed by a sheath of plastic. This allows slide participants to have more privacy and security when sliding.

Amusement park slides
Larger versions of the playground slide are much higher with multiple parallel slideways. Participants may be provided with a sack to sit on to reduce friction for faster speeds and to protect clothing.

A variation of a slide is used in waterparks and swimming pools and is called a water slide.

Modern lifeboats

April 15th, 2010

Modern life boats have been modified by the addition of an engine providing more power to get in and out of the swell area inside the surf. They can be launched from shore in any weather and perform rescues further out. Older lifeboats relied on sails and oars which are slower and dependent on wind conditions or manpower. Both types remain in use. All lifeboats of this type generally have modern electronic devices such as radios and radar to help locate the party in distress and carry medical and food supplies for the survivors.

The United States Life Saving Service began using them in 1899. Models derived from this hull design remained in use until 1987. The United States Life Saving Service later would become the United States Coast Guard and continue in its original mission of saving lives.

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (or RNLI) maintains lifeboats around the coasts of the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland manned by paid volunteers, many part-time, with equipment funded through voluntary donations[4]. There are around 50 other Lifeboat Services that are independent of the RNLI in and around the UK that provide lifesaving lifeboats and lifeboat crews 24 hours a day all year round, manned by unpaid volunteers. Their stations operate inshore and offshore (”All Weather”) lifeboats. Most Scandinavian countries also have volunteer lifeboat societies. The local branch of a society generally schedules practices, maintains a lifeboat and shed, and is contacted by commercial marine radio operators when a rescue is needed.

In Australasia, surf lifesaving clubs operate inflatable rescue boats (IRB) for in-shore rescues of swimmers and surfers. These boats are best typified by the rubber Zodiac and are powered by an outboard motor. The rescue personnel wear wet suits.

The Rigid Hulled Inflatable Boat (RIB) is now seen as the best type of craft for in-shore rescues as they are less likely to be tipped over by the wind or breakers. Specially designed jet rescue boats have also been used successfully. Unlike ordinary pleasure craft these small to medium sized rescue craft often have a very low freeboard so that victims can be taken aboard without lifting. This means that the boats are designed to operate with water inside the boat hull and rely on flotation tanks rather than hull displacement to stay afloat and upright.

The Dutch lifeboat association Koningklijke Nederlandse Reddings Maatschappij (KNRM) has developed jet-driven RIB lifeboats. This has resulted in 3 classes, the largest is the Arie Visser class: length 18,80 m, twin jet, 2 x 1000 hp, max. speed 35 kts, capacity 120 persons.

Lifeboats are also operated inland at events, organisations such as the Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS UK) provide coverage of rivers, lakes and such like.

Inflatable water slides

April 12th, 2010

Kids love to slide down the slides onto a soft surface on the bottom. Some slides have bumps in the sliding area, creating an even more fun effect. The surface of the slides are often very slick. They are made slick on purpose so that kids can slide down easily. This makes it extra fun for the kids to slide!

Slides can be made even more fun when you add water. Water slides are great for the summer months when it is blazing hot outside. Most kids love the water slides even more than the dry slides. They are a great addition to all outdoor parties. Wet slides are not recommended for indoor events. The surface of the wet slides is more slippery than the dry slides, and a lot more fun for kids, and even adults!

A great feature with inflatable water slides is that everyone gets a turn. Unlike some inflatable jumpers that pit skills in competitive games that can leave some kids left out water slides are for everyone and the only skill you need is to have fun. Many water slides can also be used as dry slides so you can have an exciting ride in the fall and winter too.

Another great feature with outdoor slides is that they encourage a healthy, active outdoor lifestyle. Instead of having kids sit around playing video games and loading up on sugary foods and heavily caffeinated soft drinks outdoor water slides encourage kids to be active and create their own excitement. The exercise kids get climbing the slide and running around to do it again is a great cardiovascular workout and as long as the kids stay hydrated the fun can last all day.

To keep your kids busy outside, give them an inflatable slide. It is such a small investment to make to give them the fun they need and the time you need for yourself. By installing an inflatable slide bouncer right outside the porch, you won’t have to worry needlessly. You can go about your job and still take care of your kids at the same time.

Active kids need active toys to keep them busy. And these inflatable slides would definitely give them the physical challenge as required by their active learning years. By allowing them to play for endless hours inside an inflatable bouncer, they would grow to have strong muscles, have lower risks of child obesity, and develop preference for physical games. It’s not just giving your kids something so you won’t see them for hours. It’s more of keeping them fit and ready for their big life ahead.
